I use Drupal for my personal blog, however, so I haven't availed myself to Akismet for quite a while. I've been using the Drupal Bad Behaviour module which performs just as well as Akismet. I get no comment spam. Like...ever. The Bad Behaviour logs show a ton of it trapped, though.
It's been so long since I used Akismet, in fact, that I was unaware how many systems it had been 'ported' to. Akismet plugins and modules now appear to be available for almost every major CMS on the market. Thanks to Rob from Awakened Voice for pointing that out.
From a functional end-user standpoint, there's no reason for me to move from Bad Behaviour to Akismet. From a community standpoint, however, it would behoove me to do so. Akismet, you see, shares comment spam information with a central database. Each Akismet plugin checks with that database as part of its anti-spam checks. Therefore, using Akismet lets me share (and benefit from) comment spam information world-wide.
Off I go to switch. I'm nothing if not a good citizen :)
